An automatic chess-playing machine had been invented long before the first international chess match was played. Kempelen, its inventor, toured many European countries demonstrating its work. In 1809 the machine played in Vienna against Napoleon. Napoleon lost the game. It goes without saying that Kempelen’s computer cannot be compared with any computer of our days. Now the time’s coming for real electronic computer which will be introduced widely into our life.

Not long ago the computer of the USA Stanford University played against the computer of the Moscow Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Physics. Four games were played simultaneously. Men acted as “coaches” and the programmes for the machines were provided by them. Strictly speaking it was a match between programmes.

Some of the famous publications declared that a machine could never do anything that would require thought that it never would learn to play chess. Mathematicians objected to it saying that all would depend how the machine had been taught. Now there can be no talk about whether a computer can or cannot play chess, because it can. M. Botvinnik, ex-world champion thinks that given time the computer will play a good game.

The British firm Brown & Co received an offer from the Russian company covering a range of sewing machines. Zigzag machines were of special interest to the British firm. Mr Brown had seen the latest design of sewing machines at an exhibition held in Moscow. He got into touch with the Russian company. The British firm was also interested in Russian machine class “M”. But they found that the price offered was too high when compared with the machines present on the market. So the British firm advised the Russian company that if they decided to make their prices more competitive they would be then ready to place their order for 1000 machines.

RETAILING

Retailing is selling goods and services to the ultimate consumer. Thus, the retailer is the most expensive link in the chain of distribution. Being middlemen, they make their profit by charging the customer 25 to 100 per cent more than the price they paid for the item.

The retailers operate through stores, mail-order houses, vending machine operators. There are different types of retail stores: department stores, discount houses, cooperatives, single line retailers. The major part (over 95 per cent) of retail establishments concentrate on a single line of merchandise for example, food, hardware, etc. But nowadays there is a trend for many single line stores to take on a greater variety of supplies.

The retailer performs many necessary functions. First, he may provide a convenient location. Second, he often guarantees and services the merchandise he sells. Third, the retailer helps to promote the product through displays, advertising or sales people. Fourth, the retailer can finance the customer by extending credit. Also the retailer stores the goods in his outlet by having goods available.
