Первый Зимний дворец был построен в 1708 году по общему признанию Д. Трезини и был расположен на дороге между Адмиралтейством и Летний дворец Петра Великого расположен на Фонтанке (в то время известной как Безымянный Ярик). Дворец был один-этажное здание, из дерева. В 1711 году здание было перевозить на Петровском острове и был поставлен почти на самом краю набережной Невы. Причина смены места была свадьба Петра и Екатерины. Царь приказал перестроить дворец превратив ее в свадебное палат.
