History of the University.
The University of Manchester has been created by bringing together The Victoria University of Manchester and University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology , two of Britain's most distinguished universities, to create a powerful new force in British Higher Education.
Manchester has a long tradition of excellence in Higher Education. UMIST can trace its roots back to 1824 and the formation of the Manchester Mechanics' Institute, whilst The Victoria University of Manchester was founded as Owens College in 1851.

В Великобритании образование является обязательным для всех детей в возрасте от 5 до 16 лет. до 5 некоторые дети посещают детские сады, в то время как большинство детей начинает свое базовое образование в детский сад, который является первым этапом начального образования. С 7 по 11 они посещают младших школ, второй этап первичного Educaion. В начальной школе дети учатся так называемому 3 Р - чтению, письму и арифметике, а также элементарным науки и информационные технологии. Они также имеют музыке, физической культуре и искусству классов.

Great Britain doesn't have a written constitution, so there are no constitutional provisions for education. The system of education is determined by the National Education Acts. Schools in England are supported from public funds paid to the local education authorities. These local education authorities are responsible for organizing the schools in their areas. If we outline the basic features of public education in Britain, firstly we'll see that in spite of most educational purposes England & Wales are treated as one unit, though the system in Wales is a different from that of England. Scotland & Nothern Ireland have their own education systems.

В Великобритании 12 миллионов детей посещают около 40 тысяч школ. Образование здесь обязательное и бесплатное для детей от 5 до 16 лет. Существует 3 вида государственных школ среднего образования:
1) Общеобразовательные школы. Они принимают учеников с любыми способностями без вступительных экзаменов. В таких школах дети обычно распределяются по разным группам —в зависимости от их уровня владения техническими или гуманитарными предметами. Практически все старшеклассники (около 90 %) идут в эти школы.
2) Грамматические школы. Они дают среднее образование на очень высоком уровне. Поступление в такую школу зависит от результатов письменного экзамена, который дети сдают в возрасте 11 лет. В грамматических школах практикуется раздельное обучение мальчиков и девочек.
3) Современные школы.

Founded in 1826 as the University of London (London University), UCL became the first university in London , and its building was built by architect William Wilkins . In 1836, University of London (London University) and Queen's University (King's University) founded the University of London (University of London), which consisted of two colleges - and the Royal University . As a result, UCL was named " University College , University of London ," but because of repetition of the word university in its name , it was renamed University College London.
According to one of the most famous universities in the world , "QS World University Rankings", UCL takes second place in Europe and the UK and the fourth largest in the world ( according to the latest annual rating of QS, which was released in September 2012 ) .

Education in Great Britain is compulsory and free for all children between the ages of 5 and 16. There are many children who attend a nursery school from the age of 3. In nursery schools they learn some elementary things such as numbers, colours, and letters. Apart from that, babies play, have lunch and sleep there. Whatever they do, there is always someone keeping an eye on them.
